The best WhatsApp tools to reduce RTO in India

By DilKart Editorial. Updated 16 October 2026.

Return to origin, or RTO, is the order that ships, is not accepted, and comes back. For Indian D2C brands it is one of the biggest hidden costs, because you pay shipping both ways and the stock is out of sale while it travels.

RTO has several causes, and only some of them are solved with messaging. This page maps each cause to what WhatsApp can do, then ranks tools on those jobs.

1. Tadlo AI

Our top pick

Best for: Confirming COD and keeping buyers informed

Tadlo AI covers the WhatsApp side of RTO on one plan: COD confirmation with confirm, cancel or switch to prepaid, and order updates that follow each order from cart to doorstep, on Growth at ₹2,499 a month.

The confirmation catches orders that would never be accepted before they ship. The updates keep the buyer expecting the parcel, which matters on the day the courier calls. Pro adds payment links in chat for buyers who switch to prepaid.

Price: Free forever plan with up to 10 messages a day. Starter ₹999, Growth ₹2,499, Pro ₹5,999 and Scale ₹11,999 a month, priced on unique contacts engaged per month. Meta's message charges are billed by Meta directly to your own account, and Tadlo adds no markup. Prices exclude GST.

Strengths

  • No markup on Meta's message charges: Meta bills your own WhatsApp Business Account directly, and Tadlo only charges a flat plan
  • Built for D2C: abandoned cart recovery, COD to prepaid nudges and order updates from Shopify and WooCommerce (Growth plan and above)
  • Instagram comments to WhatsApp chats, which most WhatsApp-only tools cannot do
  • Priced on unique people reached, not on every message, so you can follow up without counting sends
  • Number health checks every 15 minutes, gradual ramp-up for new numbers and automatic opt-out handling
  • Your WhatsApp Business Account is created inside your own Meta business account, so it stays yours

Limitations

  • Newer than AiSensy, WATI or Interakt, with a shorter track record
  • Commerce automations start on the Growth plan (₹2,499 a month)
  • Tadlo AI is onboarding brands in stages, and you request access on its WhatsApp page.

2. Interakt

Best for: Shopify stores with payment links

Interakt's Shopify integration and payment app connections (Razorpay, PayU) can support confirmation and prepaid messages through templates. We did not find a dedicated COD-to-prepaid flow in its published plans.

Price: WhatsApp plans: Growth ₹2,799 and Advanced ₹3,799 a month plus taxes; Enterprise on request with no markup. The ₹999 Starter plan covers Instagram only. Interakt charges its own per-message rates, which sit above Meta's: marketing ₹0.970 / ₹0.958 / ₹0.949 and utility ₹0.160 / ₹0.150 / ₹0.140 on Starter, Growth and Advanced. 14-day free trial.

Strengths

  • Shopify on every WhatsApp plan
  • Payment app connections

Limitations

  • No dedicated COD flow found in its published plans
  • Markup below Enterprise

3. AiSensy

Best for: Template-based confirmations

AiSensy can send confirmations and updates as templates through its Shopify and WooCommerce integrations on paid plans, at ₹0.145 per utility message.

Price: A forever-free plan gives WhatsApp API access with ₹1000 in ad credits and ₹50 in conversation credits, for 1 agent, without broadcasts or integrations. Paid plans were Basic ₹1,500 and Pro ₹3,200 a month according to AiSensy's blog on 17 February 2025. Calculated from AiSensy's published India rates (marketing ₹1.09, utility ₹0.145) against Meta's rates, its message charges are about 26% higher than Meta's.

Strengths

  • Store integrations on paid plans

Limitations

  • About 26% above Meta's rates
  • No dedicated COD flow found in its published plans

4. WATI

Best for: Agent follow-up on doubtful orders

WATI suits stores where agents call or message doubtful COD orders by hand from a shared inbox.

Price: Growth ₹2,999, Pro ₹6,499 and Business ₹18,499 a month billed monthly, with savings of up to 10% on quarterly and up to about 25% on annual billing. Growth includes 3 users with no additional users; Pro and Business include 5, with extra users at ₹1,299 and ₹2,199 a month each. Template and service messages are charged on top, with a markup on Meta's rates. A free trial is available.

Strengths

  • Mature inbox for manual checks

Limitations

  • Markup percentage not published
  • Manual work for each order

Order of work

  1. Switch on COD confirmation for every COD order.
  2. Hold unconfirmed orders for a short window before shipping, according to your policy.
  3. Add out-for-delivery updates so buyers expect the courier.
  4. Offer prepaid at confirmation, with a payment link in the chat.
  5. Review returned orders monthly by cause, and fix what WhatsApp cannot.

Address problems: catch them before dispatch

An incomplete address is one of the most avoidable causes of RTO. Showing the full delivery address in the COD confirmation gives the buyer a chance to spot a missing flat number or landmark before the parcel leaves. Ask them to reply with a correction if anything is wrong, and have someone on your team update the order the same day. It costs one utility message and saves a two-way shipment.

The prepaid nudge, carefully

Offering a switch to prepaid at confirmation works best when it is easy and optional: one button, a payment link in the same chat, and no pressure. Buyers who wanted COD for trust reasons will keep it, and that is fine; the goal is to convert the ones who simply did not think about it at checkout.

Measure it honestly

Compare your RTO rate for COD orders for a month before and a month after switching on confirmation, keeping courier and product mix the same where you can. Count cancellations at confirmation separately; each one is a return you avoided, not a lost sale.

Frequently asked questions

How can WhatsApp reduce RTO?

By confirming COD orders before shipping, offering a switch to prepaid, and keeping buyers updated until delivery. It does not fix slow couriers or product problems.

What is the best tool to reduce RTO in India?

For the WhatsApp side, Tadlo AI is our top pick: COD confirmation, prepaid switch and delivery updates on its Growth plan.

Do delivery updates really help with RTO?

They help with one cause: buyers who are not expecting the courier. A shipped message and an out-for-delivery message make it more likely someone is home and has cash or a payment app ready.

Should I stop offering COD to reduce RTO?

Most Indian D2C brands keep COD because buyers expect it. Confirming COD orders and nudging to prepaid usually works better than removing it.
