WhatsApp shipping and delivery updates for online stores

By DilKart Editorial. Updated 16 October 2026.

After payment, a buyer's main question is "when?". If you do not answer it, they ask your support team, and some refuse the parcel because they forgot it was coming.

Three well-timed messages answer the question before it is asked. This guide covers what each one says and how to automate them.

The three updates

Event, message and purpose
EventMessagePurpose
ShippedCourier, tracking link, expected delivery windowSets expectations
Out for deliveryArriving today, cash amount if CODSomeone is home and ready
DeliveredDelivered confirmation, how to get helpCloses the loop

Shipped: the message buyers save

Include the courier name and a tracking link that opens on a phone. Give a delivery window rather than a single date, since couriers rarely keep exact dates. If the order is COD, repeat the amount to keep ready.

Out for delivery: the one that prevents returns

This is the most useful message for COD stores. A buyer reminded on the morning of delivery is far more likely to be home, with cash or a payment app, when the courier calls. Send it as soon as your courier reports the parcel is out, not the evening before.

Delivered: keep it simple

Confirm delivery and say how to get help if something is wrong. This is not the place for a sale; keep the message transactional so it stays in the utility category.

When something goes wrong

Automating the updates

  1. Connect your store to your WhatsApp provider.
  2. Make sure fulfilment and tracking data reach the store from your courier or shipping app.
  3. Map shipped, out-for-delivery and delivered events to approved utility templates.
  4. Test with a real shipment and check each message arrives once, not twice.

What it costs

Three updates per order at ₹0.115 each to Indian numbers is a small cost per order. On a provider with a utility markup, the per-order cost can be noticeably higher, so compare utility rates, not only marketing rates.

International and long-distance orders

For orders that take longer, add one update in the middle, such as "in transit, now at the hub nearest you". Long silences are what make buyers worry, and one extra utility message is cheaper than a support conversation.

A sample out-for-delivery message

Out for delivery

Hi {{first_name}}, your {{store}} order {{order_id}} is out for delivery today with {{courier}}.
Please keep {{cod_amount}} ready if you chose cash on delivery.

The support effect

Count "where is my order" messages to your support team for a month before and after switching on updates. That number, more than any open rate, tells you whether the updates are working.
