WhatsApp order confirmation messages, done right

By DilKart Editorial. Updated 16 October 2026.

An order confirmation is the first message a buyer expects from you after paying. On WhatsApp it is read within minutes, which makes it the moment buyers decide whether your store feels trustworthy.

It is also one of the cheapest messages you can send, as long as it stays in the utility category. This guide covers what to put in it, how to keep it utility, and how to automate it.

Utility or marketing: why it matters

Meta's rates to Indian numbers, from 1 October 2026
CategoryRate per messageExample
Utility₹0.115Order confirmed, shipped, delivered
Marketing₹0.8631Sale, new arrivals, discount code

A confirmation that slips in a discount on the next order may be classed as marketing and cost about seven times as much. Keep offers out of order messages.

What to include

What to leave out

Getting the template approved

  1. Write it as a factual update about the order the customer placed.
  2. Use variables for name, order number, items, total and delivery window.
  3. Choose the utility category when you submit.
  4. If Meta rejects it, read the reason; promotional wording is the usual cause.
  5. Keep an approved backup version for when you change the wording.

COD orders need a different message

For cash on delivery, the confirmation should do more: ask the buyer to confirm, cancel or switch to prepaid. That message is still utility, and it catches orders that would come back. See our COD confirmation guide for the flow.

Automating it from your store

Connect Shopify or WooCommerce to your WhatsApp provider and map the order-created event to the confirmation template. Test with a prepaid order and a COD order, and check the variables fill correctly, especially names with initials and long product titles.

Opt-in comes first

Even utility messages need the customer's permission to message them on WhatsApp. Add a WhatsApp opt-in at checkout with your store name. Meta requires businesses to collect opt-in that clearly states the person is agreeing to receive messages from the business, and names the business.

What it costs a store

A store with 3,000 orders a month sends 3,000 confirmations: at ₹0.115, that is a small fixed cost per order. Check whether your provider adds a markup on utility messages; some charge noticeably more than Meta's ₹0.115.
