WhatsApp abandoned cart recovery: how to set it up
Cart recovery on WhatsApp is simple in principle and easy to get wrong. Send too early and it feels like surveillance; send too late and the buyer has moved on; forget to stop and you remind people who already paid.
This guide covers the setup in order, then the message itself.
What you need before you start
- Your store connected to a WhatsApp provider that receives cart events (Shopify or WooCommerce).
- A checkout that collects a mobile number with country code early, before payment.
- A WhatsApp opt-in at checkout with your brand name in the wording.
- An approved marketing template for the reminder, with the product and a link back to the cart.
Setup, step by step
- Connect your store and confirm cart events are arriving in the WhatsApp tool.
- Write and submit the reminder template; marketing category, with a button to the cart.
- Set the first delay; a few hours is a common starting point.
- Turn on the stop rule so placed orders never receive a reminder.
- Decide on one follow-up, a day later, or none.
- Test with a real cart from a phone that opted in.
The message structure
| Part | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recognition | Product photo and name | They remember what they wanted |
| Reassurance | "COD available, free returns within 7 days" (if true) | Removes the usual doubt |
| Action | Button: Complete your order | One tap back to the same cart |
| Help | "Questions? Reply here" | Many carts are left over a question |
Discounts: hold them back
A discount in the first reminder teaches buyers to abandon carts on purpose. If you use one, put it in the follow-up only, keep it small, and give it an end date.
What it costs
Each reminder is a marketing message: ₹0.8631 to an Indian number from 1 October 2026. 5,000 reminders cost about ₹4,316 in Meta's charges. Compare that with the revenue recovered, not with the number of carts reminded.
Which carts to remind
Not every abandoned cart deserves a message. Skip carts where the buyer has already started a conversation with your team, carts from numbers that opted out, and very low-value carts where the message costs more than it is likely to recover. Some stores also skip carts abandoned within minutes of a placed order, since those are often duplicates.
The follow-up message
If you send a follow-up, change the angle rather than repeating the first message. Answer a likely doubt, such as delivery time or returns, or mention low stock if it is true. Send it a day after the first reminder, and only if the order has not been placed. Never send a third.
Common mistakes
- Reminding buyers who already ordered, because the stop rule was not connected.
- Linking to the home page instead of the cart.
- Sending to numbers that never opted in.
- Using the same template as campaigns, which trains buyers to ignore both.
Measure recovered revenue
Track carts reminded, orders placed within a few days of a reminder, and the revenue from those orders. Tools with revenue attribution, such as Tadlo AI's Pro plan, report this; otherwise tag the cart link with UTM parameters.
