When to send abandoned cart messages, and how to test it
There is no universal best time for a cart reminder. A buyer who left a phone case in their cart and a buyer who left a sofa think on different timescales. What there is, is a simple way to find your own best timing.
This guide gives a sensible starting point, then a test you can run in a few weeks.
Why timing matters
- Too soon and the buyer may still be comparing, or feel watched.
- Too late and they have bought elsewhere or forgotten.
- Too often and they block you, which hurts your quality rating.
A starting point
| Message | When | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| First reminder | A few hours after the cart is left | Remind and help |
| Follow-up (optional) | About a day after the first | Answer a doubt or mention stock |
| Anything more | Do not send | Each extra message costs more than it recovers |
Time of day
A reminder that lands late at night gets ignored or resented. If the delay would put the message between late evening and morning, hold it until the morning. Many stores find late morning and early evening work best, but your buyers may differ.
Running a timing test
- Pick two first-delay options to compare, such as one hour and four hours.
- Split carts evenly between them, by alternating or by day.
- Run until each option has a few hundred carts.
- Compare orders recovered within three days, not just clicks.
- Keep the winner, then test the follow-up timing the same way.
Reading the results
Look at recovered orders and revenue per cart reminded, and at opt-outs. A timing that recovers slightly more but doubles opt-outs is not a win, because it shrinks the list you can message next month.
Product price changes the clock
Low-priced, impulse products usually recover best with a shorter delay. High-priced products, where buyers compare and ask family, can do better with a longer delay and a helpful follow-up, such as delivery and return details.
Stop rules are not optional
Every reminder must check that the order has not been placed. A reminder to someone who already paid is the fastest way to lose trust. Test the stop rule with a real purchase before you switch on.
Costs per reminder
Each reminder is a marketing message, ₹0.8631 to an Indian number from 1 October 2026. A follow-up doubles the cost for carts that do not recover after the first, so it needs to earn its place in your test.
Segments that deserve different timing
- Returning customers often finish faster; a shorter delay can suit them.
- First-time visitors may need a helpful follow-up about delivery and returns.
- Carts left during a sale may need a reminder before the sale ends, not a day later.
When to leave it alone
Once you have a winning timing, leave it for a few months. Changing it every week makes results impossible to read. Revisit before festive seasons, when buyers behave differently.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to send an abandoned cart WhatsApp message?
Start with a few hours after the cart is left, avoid late-night sends, and test against your own orders.
How many abandoned cart messages should I send?
One reminder, and at most one follow-up about a day later.
Does the best timing change during sales?
Often, yes. During a short sale, remind before the sale ends rather than waiting a full day for the follow-up.
Should cart reminders go out at night?
Better not. Hold reminders that would land late at night until the next morning.
How do I know if my cart reminder timing works?
Compare recovered orders and opt-outs between two timings over a few hundred carts each.
