WhatsApp winback campaigns for online stores
Most stores spend far more winning new customers than bringing back old ones, even though a past buyer already knows the brand. A well-timed WhatsApp message can bring many of them back.
This guide covers how to define, segment and message lapsed customers without burning your list. With Tadlo AI, restock, winback and review messages are sent as opted-in broadcasts from the Growth plan, with the cost shown before you send. We did not find scheduled or event-triggered restock, winback, review or reorder automations in its published plans, so you choose the segment and send each broadcast yourself.
Define "lapsed" for your store
It depends on what you sell. A skincare brand might call a customer lapsed after three months without an order; a furniture store after a year. Look at how long your repeat buyers usually wait between orders and set your line a little beyond that.
Build the segment
- Export customers whose last order is older than your line.
- Keep only those with WhatsApp marketing opt-in.
- Split by what they bought, so the message can be relevant.
- Remove anyone who complained or returned their last order.
- Upload the segment to your WhatsApp tool.
A reason to come back
- Something new in the category they bought.
- A refill of what they used up.
- A loyalty thank-you, such as free delivery.
- A small, time-limited offer, used sparingly.
Frequency
One winback message and at most one follow-up per customer per cycle. A lapsed customer who receives weekly offers is more likely to block you than to buy, and blocks lower your number's quality rating. Every template has a quality rating based on usage, customer feedback and engagement; low ratings can lead to template pacing or pausing.
Cost
Winback messages are marketing: ₹0.8631 each to Indian numbers from 1 October 2026. A segment of 2,000 lapsed customers costs a little over the cost of one 2,000-person ad, and every person on it has bought from you before.
Run it monthly, by hand
Because the segment is built from your order data, run winback as a monthly routine: pull the list, check opt-ins, send the broadcast, record results. It takes under an hour once set up.
Measure
| Measure | Why |
|---|---|
| Reads | Whether people still open your messages |
| Orders within two weeks | The point of the campaign |
| Opt-outs | Whether the list is tiring of you |
| Revenue per message | Whether it pays |
Learn why they left
Some lapsed customers had a bad experience. Include a line inviting them to reply if something went wrong, and have a person answer each reply. Fixing one problem often wins back the customer and shows you what to improve for everyone else.
When to stop messaging someone
If a customer has ignored two winback cycles, move them to a quieter list, such as only major sales, or stop messaging them. A smaller, engaged list protects your number better than a large, silent one.

Frequently asked questions
What is a WhatsApp winback campaign?
A message to customers who have not ordered in a while, giving them a reason to come back, sent only to those who opted in.
How often should I send winback messages?
Once per cycle, with at most one follow-up. More drives blocks.
Can Tadlo AI run winback automatically?
We did not find automatic winback triggers in Tadlo's published plans. You build the segment from your order data and send it as a broadcast.
Which customers should not get winback messages?
Anyone without WhatsApp marketing opt-in, anyone who complained or returned their last order, and anyone who ignored the last two cycles.
Should winback messages include discounts?
Sometimes. A relevant new product or refill often works as well, without training customers to wait for offers.
