Launching a product drop with Instagram and WhatsApp
A drop lives or dies in its first hour. The brands that sell out fast have done the work before launch day: a list of people who said they want it, on a channel where they will see the message.
Instagram is where you build interest; WhatsApp is where you reach people on the day. This playbook connects them.
Two weeks out: tease and collect
- Post a teaser reel with a keyword: "Comment DROP to get first access".
- The DM confirms they are on the list and asks for their WhatsApp opt-in or email.
- Repeat with two or three more teasers: materials, behind the scenes, price hint.
- Count sign-ups daily; they tell you how much stock to prepare.
Why WhatsApp for launch day
Instagram only lets you message someone freely within 24 hours of their last message, so a DM sent on launch day may not reach the people who commented two weeks ago. A WhatsApp opt-in lets you send the launch message as a marketing template to everyone who asked, at a time you choose.
The day before
- Get your launch template approved: product, price, link, time of launch.
- Check your messaging limit covers your list, and stagger sends if not.
- Prepare your inbox team for questions about sizes, COD and delivery.
- Load stock and test checkout on a phone.
Launch hour
- Send the WhatsApp launch message to the waitlist first, a set time before going public.
- Post the launch reel with a keyword that sends the product link in the DM.
- Pin a comment with the keyword so late arrivals know what to type.
- Watch stock and replies; pause the broadcast if a size sells out.
After the drop
- Send order confirmations and shipping updates to every buyer.
- Confirm COD orders before dispatch; drop-day impulse orders are more likely to be refused.
- Offer a restock waitlist for sold-out items, by keyword.
- Review: sign-ups, launch-message clicks, orders, and how fast stock went.
Costs to plan
Each launch message to an Indian number is a marketing message at ₹0.8631 from 1 October 2026. A waitlist of 10,000 costs about ₹8,631 in Meta's charges. Instagram DMs do not carry a Meta per-message charge, but some tools cap DMs per month or bill by contact, which matters on launch day.
Restock waitlists
Sold-out sizes are a second launch waiting to happen. Add a keyword such as RESTOCK to the launch reel and send people who comment it a DM that collects their WhatsApp opt-in for that product. When stock lands, message only that list.
Common launch mistakes
- Launching publicly before the waitlist gets its message.
- A comment keyword nobody can spell.
- No plan for sold-out sizes.
- Templates submitted the night before and still in review at launch.

Frequently asked questions
How do I build a waitlist for a product drop?
Use an Instagram comment keyword that sends a DM asking for a WhatsApp opt-in or email, then message that list on launch day.
Can I message everyone who commented on my teaser on launch day?
Not reliably on Instagram, because messaging is limited to 24 hours after their last message. Collect a WhatsApp opt-in or email instead.
How much does a WhatsApp launch broadcast cost?
₹0.8631 per marketing message to Indian numbers from 1 October 2026, so about ₹8,631 for 10,000 people, plus any provider markup.
